Alice (Hammond) Simpson

Biography:

Mrs. Alice Hammond Simpson may have been born as early as 1826, although more likely was born in the mid 1840s. Her birth place is variously recorded as Howard County, South Carolina, Georgia and New Jersey. She was reportedly enslaved by both the Gaither and Crapster families.

She married Mr. Henry Simpson as the Civil War was ending, before 1865. They have not yet been found in the 1870 Census. In 1880, the couple were living with their six children in Westminster, Maryland. Mr. Simpson worked on local farms, while Mrs. Simpson kept house.

Mr. Simpson died in the late 1880s or 1890s. By 1900, Mrs. Simpson was living with three of her children and one grandchild. In 1910, she moved in with her daughter, Mrs. Ada (Simpson) Morgan. They lived together until her death in 1934. At that time, the papers reported her age to be 108.

Mrs. Alice Simpson is buried in an unmarked grave in Ellsworth Cemetery.
