Biography:
The Reverend Perry G. Walker is buried in Ellsworth Cemetery, next to his first wife.
Rev. Walker was born in June of 1831 in Libertytown, Maryland. His parents have not yet been found. Most likely, he was born a free man, although his educational opportunities would have been severely limited in antebellum Maryland. He worked as a both a tanner and as a famer, which were likely the trades of his father.
In 1853, he married Ms. Mary E. E. Snowden, the daughter of the Rev. John B. Snowden. They had at least seven children. The Rev. Walker was licensed to preach in 1859.
He helped form the Washington Methodist Conference, which first met in 1864. In 1873, Rev Walker was the pastor of a congregation of over 1,400 people at the Sharp Street church in Baltimore. Over the years, he lived & preached in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC.
Their children appeared to have prospered as well. One of their sons, Adam, went to Howard University medical school and became a doctor in 1891. He served in the US Army during the Spanish American War, and later practiced in Kentucky. A daughter, Fannie, attended Morgan College. She was married to Bishop Meade, and they traveled to Africa as missionaries.
Mrs. Mary Snowden Walker died in 1903, and Rev. Walker was remarried to Mrs. Eliza Jane Squirrel (nee Black) in 1904. Her first husband was Mr. John Squirrel, a US Army Veteran. They are buried in Western Chapel Cemetery, also in Carroll County.
Rev Walker passed away after a long illness in 1914 at the age of 82. His funeral was well attended by many of his fellow ministers and fellow citizens of Westminster.
