Biography:
Mary A. Johnson was born in the mid 1800s, likely about 1847, in Middleburg, Maryland. Born before the Civil War, she was the freeborn child of Thomas and Harriet Johnson. While she’s not found in the 1860 Census, by 1870, she was working for the Grimes family in Westminster. She worked for them and lived with them for many years.
Sometime after 1880, she moved to Baltimore. While living in the city, Ms. Johnson worked as a cook for a private family and took in washing.
When she died in 1895, Ms. Mary Johnson was buried in an unmarked grave in Ellsworth Cemetery.
