Biography:
Mrs. Jane Thompson was born on March 2nd, 1792. She was married to Samuel Thompson. The earliest record of the couple is in 1850. It is likely that they were enslaved prior to this time, although records of their manumission have not been found yet. Neither were reported as being literate, which was not uncommon among the African American population. In 1860, in Maryland only 20% of African American residents were literate, compared to 80% of the white residents.
Mrs. Thompson is buried near her husband, their granddaughter and her family. Their marker is one of four large obelisks at Ellsworth.
