Biography:
Mr. James Snowden is buried near his wife and her parents in Ellsworth Cemetery, in Westminster, Maryland.
We don’t know much about Mr. James Snowden. The first confirmed record that we have for him is the 1870 Census. He’s living with his wife, Georgeanna, and their two children. Prior to the Civil War, he may have been enslaved or he may have been living in another part of the state. Since his eldest child is 21, she would have been born before the war. She was living with her maternal grandparents in 1850, and may have been born free. However, we cannot find either Mr. Snowden, his wife or their child in the 1860 Census.
Mr. Snowden worked as a servant in a private household. He died in 1872.
He shares a memorial with his wife and her parents in Ellsworth Cemetery. His name is misspelled as “Jones Snowden.”
