Biography:
Mr. George W. Bell was born in Manchester, the son of a free black couple, Mr. Robert and Mrs Fannie Bell. They moved to the Westminster area.
Mr. Bell married Ms. Francis Elder (profiled last week) in 1858. They had seven children, five of whom survived him. He worked variously in the mines and on the farms.
He died in the winter of 1923. His obituaries disagree as to his age, stating in one place that he was 89 years old and in another that he was 91 years old. Mr. Bell died at his daughter’s home in Baltimore.
In his will, he specifies that he be buried at Ellsworth Cemetery, and a headstone erected at the graves of himself and his wife. He mentions that Ellsworth is near “The Old Westminster Fairgrounds.”
