Harry C. Smith

Biography:

Mr. Harrison C. Smith was born on March 28, 1866. His father, Mr. Ephraim Smith, had recently returned for service in the US Army during the Civil War. His mother, Mrs. Louisa (Jones) Smith, would die before his first birthday.

He lived with his father and older sister in Westminster, Maryland. In 1876, his father remarried. They continued to live in Westminster, where he likely worked as a laborer with his father.

In 1885, Mr. Smith was working for Dr. Joseph T. Hering. He was accused of stealing cigars, and acquitted of all charges in court. In the 1890s, Mr. Smith was the sexton of the Westminster Ascension Church. (A sexton is responsible for the maintenance of the church grounds and buildings.)

Mr. Harry C. Smith (as he was known) died on February 12, 1896 of tuberculosis. He was nearly 30 years old. We do not know if he ever married or had children. He was buried in Ellsworth Cemetery, near Westminster, Maryland.

His headstone has recently been cleaned as part of the general restoration of the cemetery.
