Biography:
Mrs. Emma (Rose) Bruce was born in Virginia in the 1850s and was likely enslaved. She was the child of Mr. Alexander Rose. Following the war, she moved north and met Mr. Isaac Bruce. They were married in Philadelphia in the fall of 1883.
The couple lived in Westminster, where the couple worked on the local farms. They adopted a daughter, Rosa Bruce.
Sadly, Mrs. Emma Bruce died in 1908 of “grip” which is an older name for influenza.
She is buried in an unmarked grave in Ellsworth Cemetery in Westminster, Maryland.
