Arthur Squirrel is buried in an unmarked grave in Ellsworth Cemetery in Westminster, Maryland.
Mr. Squirrel was born in 1888, the child of Joseph M. C. Squirrel and Laura B. (Sherman) Squirrel. His grandfather, John Squirrel, was a Veteran of the Civil War. He grew up on Union Street, attending school and church on that street as well.
He worked as a farm laborer and a day laborer in town. About 1916, he married Golden Myrtle Bell. The next fall, Mr. Squirrel enlisted in the US Army, and served as a bugler overseas in France. He was with a field artillery unit.
Upon his return, Private Squirrel gave a number of talks, demonstrating his gas mask and describing the gas used. The couple settled on Union Street. He served as the superintendent of the Union Street Sunday school. He was well respected in the community.
Mr. Arthur Squirrel (sometimes spelled Squarrel) died in the spring of 1916. He was buried with military honors rendered by the ROTC unit of Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College. His grave in Ellsworth Cemetery is unmarked. At least two of his children also served in the US Army, continuing the family’s legacy of service to our Nation.
